In 1843, Sindh fell into the hands of the British Empire. Motivated by the spirit of independence, 38 sepoys escaped the cantonment area, the plan was foiled and eight of them were killed, the rest were arrested sentenced to death.

They were executed brutally, by firing Cannonballs on them and their corpses buried at the same barren ground. Later revealed to the citizens, and knowing the importance of the place, some threw flowers and while others lit candles at the location.

Later at the same ground, foundation stone of Empress Market was led down in 1884, the total cost of the project was Rs 0.12 million.

One can find every imaginable fruit and nut at relatively cheap prices from a wide selection of merchants at Empress market. Walking around and sampling the variety of nuts and dry fruit is an experience by itself.

Old city markets provides you comprehensive array of opportunities to explore true Karachi along with Window-shopping in a beautiful outdoor retail environment, or an excellent opportunity to purchase what you never want or you never think or drinking or eating.

After exploring Empress Market we walked to Bohri Bazzar which is one of the old markets of Karachi. This market is named after Bohri community. Since Hussain D'Silva Construction Company floated a massive plan for the renovation and redevelopment of Bohri Bazaar in 1958.

Bohri Bazaar is also a home to one of the oldest Nimko shops in Karachi, which is still very popular in Karachi. Snack on a samosa from Nimko while you shop, followed by spicy chaat and end it with a delicious faluda. A trip to Bohri bazaar would be incomplete without this.

Along with other shops, you will also find those related to beauty such as shops selling toupees, Paranday, bangles along with artificial wigs for women are imported from Korea, China and India.

All that needs to be done is improve/replace the electrical wirings, fix the drainage system. We must retain and strengthen such places and be proud of them....
